Position Description


Performs skilled mechanical and/or analytical duties in the coordination and completion of projects. Work is performed under general guidelines using established procedures and evaluated on results obtained. May supervise subordinate employees.


About the Department and/or College

Mechanical Engineering is the practice of using applied physics to solve real world problems and is one of the most diverse fields in engineering. Students earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering can pursue careers in aerospace, automotive, petroleum, petrochemicals, electrical power, electronics, semiconductors and computers, manufacturing, healthcare and research positions in academia and government laboratories. Mechanical Engineering is the largest major in the engineering college at Texas Tech University. The department is ranked in the top 25 in producing BSME graduates according to ASEE. The McDermott Advanced Manufacturing and Prototyping Facility provides hands-on learning experience in manufacturing: Traditional Manufacturing Technologies - Advanced CNC Capabilities - Additive Manufacturing - 3D printing on metals, plastic and other materials.



Major/Essential Functions

The primary responsibilities of this position require performing highly skilled and analytical duties in the coordination and completion of projects using the various tools and equipment available, including; fabrication, testing, and repair within the M.E. shop.

This position will include skills in the reading of drawings, schematics, diagrams in order to manufacture and review parts. Along with basic skills in the measuring of parts with various tools, scales, tape measure, dial calipers, etc.
Additionally, the Technician III will perform skilled mechanical and analytical duties in the completion of projects using various fabrication skills and repair techniques.

  • Duties will include; assisting with department inventory, assisting with M.E. shop equipment, supplies and materials inventory. Demonstrate an aptitude for applying sound budgeting and fiscal planning techniques within constraints.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with peers, users and outside vendors, logically determine a course of action to resolve problems, organize, prioritize and exercise independent judgement based on the understanding of the department's policies.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment free of clutter, and display a sense of pride in ones work setting the example.



    Required Qualifications

    High school or equivalent and four years experience. Additional job related education may substitute for required experience on a year for year basis.



    Preferred Qualifications

    • Demonstrable working knowledge in the use of various tools, a basic interest of emerging technologies in prototyping and manufacturing
    • A technical skillset in a skilled trade applicable to a mechanical engineering prototyping and manufacturing machine lab interest in learning new skills in the fabrication and machining trades.
    • Demonstrable knowledge and abilities in the standard office programs such as Word, Excel, and Banner.

      Occasional Duties

      Assists in:
      • Maintaining safe work environments in the M.E. shop and various labs in the department
      • Demonstrating safe work practices and enforcing rules on safety, procedures, materials handling, and maintenance.
      • Maintenance and use of both M.E. shop and lab equipment in the department with a working knowledge in the use of various metal working tools
      • Electrical testing and power systems, a solid understanding of technical systems found in manufacturing, fabrication and electrical technology.
        In addition, the Technician III will assist in helping to train students and student shop employees in the safe use and maintenance of machines and equipment for the various manufacturing process classes, design classes and research projects.
