Position Overview: As a Power Plant Operator, the primary responsibility is to assist in the operation and maintenance of the process machinery used in conjunction with electric generation power plants. This position is part of the City of Lubbock/Lubbock Power and Light Apprenticeship Program and progression is based on apprenticeship guidelines established by the Apprenticeship Training Committee. The duties of this position include working on a crew, making plant rounds to check and record the status of equipment, assisting with inspections and repairs on high pressure steam boilers, turbines, pumps, compressors, and all other associated power plant auxiliary equipment. Additionally, the Power Plant Operator is responsible for performing maintenance on equipment as needed, recording malfunctions of equipment, instruments, or controls, and reporting them to the supervisor. The Power Plant Operator will be required to work 12-hour rotating shift work and overtime as operation, outage, and emergency schedules require. The work schedule will be a modified DuPont schedule, which will use a four-week cycle: four-night shifts, three days off, three-day shifts, one day off, three-night shifts, three days off, four-day shifts, seven days off. To qualify for this position, the applicant should have graduated from high school or equivalent with an additional one-year experience in one of the following disciplines as it pertains to a steam powered electric generating plant: operations, chemistry, maintenance, instruments and controls; or any combination of relevant education and experience. A valid current driver's license is required, and the applicant will also be required to complete a physical exam, Hazwoper Certification, Gas Pipeline Operation Qualification (OQ), and the Apprenticeship Program prior to commencement of the work. The applicant must have demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities, including the knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment associated with high pressure steam electric power generation or comparable industrial machinery, water purification equipment and techniques, and general maintenance practices. The applicant should be able to read and record information accurately, read and comprehend various measuring devices, instructions, books, and operation/maintenance manuals, keep and maintain records, act calmly in emergency situations, coordinate eye, hand, and feet movement to operate vehicles and heavy equipment, operate the equipment and machinery associated with power plant operation and maintenance, pass a respiratory physical exam, enter inspection doors on boilers, condensers, turbines, drums, and vessels, work strenuously with heavy tools in hot, cold, and noisy conditions, and in confined spaces, climb stairs and ladders, and erect and work from scaffolding at heights, properly use and care for personal protective equipment, lock-out and tag-out systems and equipment to perform maintenance, listen to, take, and follow directions from senior plant personnel, work in a safe and responsible manner, and communicate effectively with others. The physical requirements of this position include continuously lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds, prolonged periods of standing and walking, frequently walking, standing, bending, and kneeling during the shift, frequently climbing ladders, stairs, and other inclined surfaces, frequently pushing and pulling objects to perform duties such as mopping and sweeping or opening and closing valves or moving large tool boxes, frequently flexing the upper trunk forward at the waist and partially flexing at the knees, frequently rotating the upper trunk to the right or left while sitting or standing, occasionally moving the entire body along a surface in a crawling motion to get inside a boiler, and moving arms above, at, or below shoulder height. The estimated salary range for this position is $40-45/hour, and the benefits include health, dental, vision, 401k, PTO, short-term and long-term disability. This position may require extensive travel, and the candidate will be provided with a per diem allowance to cover their expenses while on the road. This is a contract position that will run through November 1, 2023. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Working on a crew, assisting in the operation and maintenance of boiler, turbine, generator, and auxiliary equipment to produce electricity and steam;


      • Making plant rounds to check and record status of equipment (process pressures and temperatures, oil levels, bearing temperatures, water levels, etc.);
      • Assisting with inspections and repairs on high pressure steam boilers, steam turbines, pumps, compressors, and all other associated power plant auxiliary equipment;
      • Performing maintenance on equipment as needed;
      • Recording malfunctions of equipment, instruments, or controls and report to supervisor;
      • Working 12 hour rotating shift work and overtime as operation, outage, and emergency schedules require;
      • Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor, which may include: Train, learn, and work in Mechanics, Instrumentation Controls and Electrical, or Chemistry.

        Qualifications/Education/Experience:

        • Graduation from high school or equivalent with an additional one-year experience in one of the following disciplines as it pertains to a steam powered electric generating plant: operations, chemistry, maintenance, instruments and controls; or any combination of relevant education and experience.

          • Valid Current Driver's License required.


          • This position will also be required to complete the following prior to commencement of the work

            • Physical Exam
            • Hazwoper Certification
            • Gas Pipeline Operation Qualification (OQ)
            • Apprenticeship Program
