The goals of the unit are to provide high quality care to critically ill patients admitted to the Neuro ICU and return the injured/critically ill back to a healthy state. These goals are accomplished while also improving healthcare through research and education for patients with immediately life-threatening neurological problems. This is accomplished through a multidisciplinary effort that considers all aspects of a person's life, including his or her physical, social, spiritual and psychological well-being. A multi-disciplinary approach to nursing care is utilized in the Neuro ICU. The nurse-to-patient ratio is a goal of 1-2 patients per 1 nurse. This can be adjusted by the charge nurse according to patient and staffing needs. This delivery care model dictates that the ideal candidate must be able to coordinate needed patient care with all disciplines. The ideal candidate must be able to make the education of patients and families a top priority and coordinate the necessary patient care with all members of the multidisciplinary team.Admission criteria to the Neuro ICU is determined by, but not limited to, the following guidelines:StrokeSubarachnoid hemorrhage, intracranial hemorrhageSubdural hematomasBrain tumorsNerve and muscle problems that affect breathing, such as myasthenia gravis and Guillain-Barre' syndromeBrain and spinal cord injuriesBrain or central nervous system infections (encephalitis and meningitis)Any catastrophic disorder affecting neurologic functionSpinal surgery patientsCraniotomy patientsA comprehensive team approach to recovery is utilized in the Neuro ICU. Patient care providers will include Registered Nurses, Advanced Practice Providers, Respiratory Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Pharmacists, Social Services, Case Managers, Nursing Support Services and most importantly the patient's support system. ORIENTATION-- UMC Hospital Orientation-- UMC Nursing Orientation-- Electronic Documentation trainingIndividualized Unit Specific Orientation-- Unit specific orientation is provided in addition to UMC's Hospital and Nursing Orientation.Qualifications-- Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.-- Valid Texas Nursing License or Compact Licensure / Graduate Nurse Permit Required.-- Knows clinical and nursing standards and practices in according with the nursing scope and standards of practice as set forth by the American Nurses Association.-- Provides professional nursing care to patients and provides supervision and guidance to the members of the nursing staff.-- Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care.-- Has working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies.-- Requires adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills.-- Talking and hearing is essential for communication.-- Visual acuity is required to work with patients for observation, assessment, and electronic charting.-- Current CPR certification from American Heart Association.-- ACLS may be required based upon area of practice.-- Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.-- Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.-- Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting or patients with assistance is required.-- All employees must review, sign and utilize UMC's Standards of Excellence.
