Child Life Specialist
Functioning as a member of the health care team, the Child Life
Specialist is responsible for supporting children, teens, and
family members in the health care setting by providing
developmentally appropriate play/recreation and activities,
education and preparation for medical procedures, and emotional
support of the child and family.
- Bachelor's Degree Child Life, Child Development, Early
Childhood Education, Family Studies or a closely related field.
- Coursework/Training Child life specific clinical training
experience (e.g., practicum and/or internship) in a pediatric
- Coursework/Training Trained in child development principles and
impact of illness and hospitalization on children and families:
- Application of therapeutic play, developmental education, and
expressive modalities to address psychosocial needs of children and
- Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) or eligible within
3-months to take the certification exam through the Child Life
Certifying Committee. Child life certification must be attained
within 1-year of hire date.
- BLS (AHA) Certification/training within 30 days of
- 1 year Experience working with young children and adolescents
in a healthcare setting.
