Assistant Professor of Wind Conducting & Marching Band Position Requirements: Master's degree in wind conducting or equivalent professional experience required; terminal degree (DMA or PhD) preferred. Significant experience with collegiate athletic bands, as well as proven success conducting concert ensembles. Successful public-school teaching experience is required. Record of professional activity and/or research/creative scholarship that demonstrates emerging or established national recognition in marching band, wind conducting, or music education is encouraged. A demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serving diverse student populations, and strong evidence of the ability and desire to perform service. Duties include, but are not limited to, recruiting, program-building, and commitment to extra-curricular activities in the school, college, university, and community. Candidate will continue professional research/creative activity that is relevant to the current and future practice of marching band, wind conducting, and/or music education. A commitment to quality, student-centered education and working as a team member. Candidates who have clear potential to support scholarship through extramural funding, as appropriate to research specialization, are encouraged to apply. Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching at the university level and working with diverse student populations and first- generation students. The ability to form partnerships within and outside of the university, regionally, nationally, and internationally. The ideal candidate will have successful experience teaching and managing college athletic bands, with an understanding of current trends related to bands within Division 1 College Athletics. An appropriate knowledge of wind conducting, repertoire facility in teaching all levels of student musicians, and an active record of band conducting achievement that includes international/ national/regional/community engagement and/or collaboration. Familiarity with current and cutting-edge practice in wind conducting and pedagogy. Position Description: The successful candidate will: Serve as Director of the Goin' Band from Raiderland. Coordinate the indoor athletic band program. Serve as conductor of the Concert Band. Serve and support Summer Band Camp. Teach music education classes relevant to area of expertise, such as marching band techniques and/or band administration. Assist the Director of Bands with all aspects of the University band program. Demonstrate ability to teach courses in wind conducting; explore the potential expansion of the band programs and their curricular offerings; continue to engage in nationally/internationally recognized creative/professional practice and/or scholarship. Embrace new forms of critically engaged disciplinary practice/scholarship in the evolving field of wind conducting and opportunities to teach broadly across the music curricula and envision new ways to expand beyond them. Where appropriate, demonstrate potential to bring external funding to the School of Music/College. As a collaborative departmental citizen, actively participate in departmental, college and university service, including committee work and academic support services such as recruitment of high quality wind and percussion students into the program; audition review; program review (including implementation and assessment of outcomes); help to maintain the band conducting standards for accreditation with NASM; and advise students across diverse communities, supervision of student organizations, and participation in sponsored off-campus activities.
